[Architecture] Chenchow Little - Skylight House

Remodeling and Home Design
A sleeper house is one that looks relatively standard from the street but hidden behind the facade lies something completely unexpected. Ok, the term in my vocabulary actually stems from street racing; a sleeper is a car that looks average from the outside but secretly houses an powerful racing engine. Not unlike the silver Impala from the intro for the movie Drive. This is a 'don't judge a book by its cover' house.

The Skylight House, designed by the husband and wife team of Chenchow Little Architects in Sydney, Australia, is part of a conservation streetscape which required them to maintain the Victorian façade. Step inside and you'll find the rest of the home to be a strikingly minimal, Scandinavian inspired dream home. Clean, open, airy, and overflowing with light from above. Wouldn't it be fun, owning a house like this? Knowing that you have a secret house on the block. Holding the power to blow the minds of all unassuming guests as they walk in the front door. It's like living a secret life, a life in disguise. Almost like your very own batcave, but hidden in plain sight. You're living a lie. A cool lie.

  3. It must be hard to apply your own personal house design preferences while following a standard. But I guess it wasn’t that hard with how things turned out. I like the fact that the house is a good friend with sunshine. :D A bright room creates the illusion of space and depth. I’m not sure, though, if what I’m seeing is an illusion, or if the house truly is spacious. ;p

  4. This house is a combination of a vintage and modern style. From the outside, you can see the stunning Victorian façade, but the inside speaks of a contemporary concept, like the use of skylights. This modern roofing feature adds lot of brightness to the space. You don’t even need a chandelier or any lighting fixture during the day. The sun will take care of that.

  5. I certainly agree with all here that this house looks fantastic! It speaks of modernity with a little twist of antiquity. The combination is quite good. But the main attractions of the house for me are the sun-lit rooms, thanks to the skylights. These rooms look much brighter than the rest of the rooms in the house. The spaces look much brighter and warmer, and very easy on the eyes.

  6. This house truly looks awesome! From the outside, it looks small, but on the inside, it’s very spacious and beautifully designed! Actually, the facade gave away that this house has a stunning interior design to boast of, but one wouldn’t know how grand it is until he/she takes a peek inside.
